6 Most Creative Billboard Ads Ever

Written by Kimberly Tan | May 13, 2022 4:33:00 AM

From witty to downright cringey, billboard ads are almost impossible to ignore. Then again, that is the purpose of a static billboard – to stop you in your tracks and capture your attention whenever you step out of your home.

While billboards are among the earliest forms of outdoor advertising, much has been said about their effectiveness in today’s digitalised world. Judging from the number of billboard ads seen along the bustling streets and intersections around town, however, billboard advertising is far from being extinct. Be it for promotional or brand reinforcement purposes, it remains a tried-and-true favourite among businesses when it comes to out-of-home (OOH) advertising.

Two things that make an effective billboard advertisement: an impactful design that commands attention, and a brilliant copy that helps your brand message stick. These head-turning billboard ads have certainly wowed us.

1. McDonald's (Malaysia)

What better way to celebrate our love for fast food and famous Malaysian landmarks than food-inspired ads? Back in 2019, McDonald’s Malaysia (known locally as McD or “Mekdi”) rolled out a series of billboard ads depicting iconic landmarks constructed using McDonald’s well-loved food items, in efforts to localise the brand.

2. Nando's (Malaysia)

The epitome of tasteful humour, Nando’s is no stranger to witty and tongue-in-cheek adverts. Their secret sauce? The ability to tap into local audiences by using current affairs as the basis for their ad campaigns. Nando’s Malaysia also incorporates our national language, Bahasa Malaysia to make their ads locally relevant.

3. Dairy Champ (Malaysia)

Local celebrities reimagined as local delights – why not? Popular creamer and condensed milk brand, Dairy Champ roped in two prominent Malaysian figures - legendary musician, Dato' David Arumugam and cosmetics entrepreneur, Dato' Seri Vida – to be featured on its campaign to promote Dairy Champ’s key products.

4. Burger King (Worldwide)

Every brand’s worst nightmare: consumers not knowing your products. According to a study conducted by Burger King in four major cities (Tokyo, London, Stockholm, and Mexico City), only 3% of the participants were able to name the burgers on their menu. Additionally, the majority couldn’t name anything else but the world-famous Whopper. Interestingly, the survey results inspired Burger King to serve up their latest global OOH campaign.

5. Formula (Indonesia)

Leading Indonesian oral care brand, Formula cleverly delivers the key message with a seemingly simple billboard ad – steering away from the typical “pretty-models-with-pearly-whites” advertisements associated with oral care products. Talk about making a strong statement!

6. Panasonic (Indonesia)

Trimming your nose hair is tricky business, so is cutting live wires. This amusing outdoor ad by Panasonic Indonesia utilised real electric wires and poles to dramatise the safety feature of Panasonic’s nose hair trimmer. Who says you can’t add a touch of drama into your ads to drive your message home?
