My 16-week internship at AdEasy is coming to an end soon. So, what is it like to work in an adtech startup in Malaysia? Read on.
A quick self-introduction: I’m Fathini, but people call me Nini. I’m currently pursuing a BA (Hons) degree in International Business Management at Asia Pacific University (APU). Besides being a full-time student, I’ve been working as a consultant for financial services since I was 15 (I’m known as ninicomei). Back in my diploma days, I did not do any internships because it wasn’t a requirement for my course. Hence, AdEasy marks my very first internship experience.
That's me - the tudung-clad girl behind our resident photographer, Hong Bin.
I have always wanted to work in a startup, because of its culture that advocates open communication and free-flowing creativity at work. In addition, I was curious about the state of advertising in Malaysia, and how advertising helps in growing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). When I got the offer to join AdEasy as a Product Intern, I jumped at the opportunity. Throughout my internship, I work alongside our Product Manager Vanessa Sim.
What does a Product Intern do? Research - lots of it! We at AdEasy strive to continuously enhance our platform, in order to improve end-user experience. My responsibilities include conducting research to provide feasible solutions to address tech-related concerns; and suggesting ways to optimise the existing features on the platform. I have also helped out our Sales team in cold-calling prospects, particularly SMEs, to publicise AdEasy PLUS - Malaysia’s first media subscription plan.
The exciting part of being an intern? Getting a glimpse into the working world. I could have just searched for intern stories online, but nothing beats experiencing it for yourself. I’ve learnt a lot along the way, and here are my key takeaways:
Be Proactive
Unlike in schools or even tertiary institutions, there is no room for spoon-feeding in the workplace. Remember, you’re working with professional adults, not your classmates. When you’re done with your tasks, don’t just sit around waiting for your next assignment. Instead, you should establish a line of open communication with your direct superior - get their feedback on your completed jobs and find areas of improvement. Run out of tasks to do? Take the initiative to approach other teams and see if they need some help (fact: they do appreciate the assistance). I mentioned earlier about how I did cold calls with the Sales team. Although I have no prior experience in sales, I took up the challenge and learnt the ropes from Rufina, our Senior Sales & Media Manager.
Connect With Your Colleagues
Let’s face it – work can be a drag sometimes. The secret to getting through those slow days at work? Your colleagues! Building positive work relationships with your co-workers helps tremendously in improving teamwork and boosting everyone’s morale. Moreover, your work friends make a great support system. Don’t restrict yourself to just your own teammates, get to know the people from other departments too. Even though I’m just an intern, I see it as a chance for me to grow my professional network. Thus, I made the effort to socialise with everyone while at work. Not sure how to approach them? Here’s a tip: ask them out for lunch or a coffee break. :)
Be Yourself
You only have one chance to make a lasting first impression, they say. Granted, we want to get off on the right foot in our new job, but it doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be someone you’re not. The best way to impress? Be your authentic self. Not only you’ll feel confident, but you’ll also gain respect and trust from those around you. First-day jitters are normal - go in with the right attitude and you’ll do great.
My internship at AdEasy has been a wonderful learning experience. I’ll definitely miss my AdEasy teammates. As for me, I’m going back to university to finish my degree. Wish me luck!
