This year’s Raya spirit is very much alive, amid Malaysia’s transition to an endemic phase with fewer Covid-19 restrictions.

With Raya-theme decors adorning shopping malls and retail stores nationwide, the festive mood is definitely in the air. From balik kampung to boisterous family reunions, Muslims in the country are eagerly welcoming back nostalgic Hari Raya traditions they’ve missed for the past two years.

Want to get your Raya vibes on? Watch Hari Raya advertisements. From humorous skits to tearjerkers, festive ads are popular because their relatable content strikes a chord with local audiences. Every year, brands are pushing the envelope with their Raya ad campaigns to achieve virality, more so in this digital age. While some had great successes, others missed the mark (Watson Malaysia’s controversial "Legenda Cun Raya" ad in 2017 is a prime example).

Scroll on to watch our top picks for Raya ads that gave us all the feels. Warning: Get ready for an emotional roller-coaster ride.

1. Al-Kisah Janda Beranak Tujuh (2003)

One of the many masterpieces by the late Yasmin Ahmad, this Petronas ad depicts the story of a widow and her seven sons preparing a Raya feast. Alas, the sons forgot a key ingredient – beef! Hence, a frantic search ensued.

When I was a kid, I saw this ad as nothing but a joke. Now that I’m older, I understand the underlying message. The quote at the end truly hits home.

2. Plastic Bowl (2006)

Here’s another Raya ad by Petronas that will warm even the coldest heart. This ad highlights the topic of filial responsibility, and how children are the reflection of their parents.

I like how this ad portrays the unbreakable bond between parents and children. Taking care of our parents is more than just a filial duty. It’s also a way to honour them for raising us. In addition, parents need to be aware that children tend to imitate their behaviors.”

- Zamira, Frontend Developer

3. Adik (2014)

How can you not be tickled by the mischievous little girl in the ad? This cheeky Raya ad from Telekom Malaysia (TM) is a fun breakaway from the usual sobfest.

The cutest Hari Raya ad ever! I laughed so hard when I first watched this. I’m also the “adik” in my family, so I can totally relate to her sassiness. Being a carefree kid is just a #vibe. Ah, the good old days…

- Fathini, Product Intern

4. Cucu-cucu Tok Ucu (2019)

An award-winning Raya advertisement by Celcom (it bagged the “Ad of the Year” and “Best Ad in Telecommunications” awards at the YouTube Malaysia Ad Awards 2019) that narrates how a tech-savvy nenek (Malay for grandmother) utilises technology and innovation in telecommunications to connect with her grandsons.

Today’s technological advances have enabled us to easily communicate with one another, no matter where we are. While the generational gap is apparent, it’s fun to watch the hilarious contrasts of personalities between the young and old. Plus, “Jantan” is a funny bonus.

- Nabila, HR Executive

5. Murai (2007)

Simple yet significant, this poignant Hari Raya commercial underlines the lesson about patience, and how expressing parental love comes in various forms.

Every parent has different ways of showing affection to their children. Some may not express it openly, but know that our parents will always be our biggest supporters in life.

BONUS: Since we’re in the mood for Raya, our teammates shared their favourite Raya hits that they can’t stop singing to.

Ammar: Suasana Hari Raya by Anuar Zain and Ellina

“The lyrics are incredibly on point in describing the joy of celebrating Hari Raya. The song is filled with both happiness and sadness, as we reminisce about our childhood memories that cannot be altered.

Zamira: Seloka Hari Raya by Uji Rashid and Hail Amir

Old but gold. How can you not feel excited by this tune? Hari Raya is all about seeking forgiveness from each other.

Fathini: Balik Kampung by Sudirman

This 1984 Raya song is well-loved by many Malaysians. It encapsulates the anticipation of travelling back to our hometown for Hari Raya celebration. Fun fact: my Mum’s a hardcore fan of the late Sudirman.

Nabila: Warna Warni Aidilfitri by various artistes

“One of my all-time favourite hits because it’s catchy. I like how poetry is incorporated in the lyrics. This song captures the festive spirit perfectly.”

Nabil: Salam Aidilfitri Ayahanda Dan Bonda by Raihan and Hujan

I love this song because it features two of my favourite local artistes – Hujan and Raihan. It also reminded me of my younger days when my parents had to work hard to make ends meet, and be able to purchase new Raya clothes for my siblings and I. As I got older, I learnt to appreciate the sacrifices they made in order for us to live comfortably.
